This was probably 15 years ago - we'd been in the area about a year, but I'd made some decent new-ish friends through hobbies, clubs, etc. We had 3 low-maintenance cats, and we needed to go out of state for a family thing over a long weekend.

I asked our group of friends if they knew of any teenagers who needed some extra money to stop by our home once a day to feed them and refresh their water. One couple - early 30s said they'd love to do it for free. -

They had both cats and dogs, and I knew they spoiled them, so I was happy to have found a solution. I left some general notes and a thank-you pet supply gift card on the counter.

The second night that we were away, was scrolling FB when I found the wife's post: "Game and Pizza Night!" with some pictures of multiple people around our dining room table, some with our cats.

They didn't ask us, they didn't tag us, they just had people over. I kept asking others, "Is this normal? ?" - because maybe I'd missed a clue somewhere that this was an understood agreement that I was unaware of.

When we got back, they never mentioned it. Their take-and-bake pizza boxes were in the trash, and our dishes they'd used were in the dishwasher (at least they cleaned up? )

I did know some of the other people who were there, and I asked how the game/pizza night came about. Evidently the couple shared our garage code with others to just let themselves in.

I noped the F out of that friend group really quickly, changed the garage codes, and from that moment forward I realized the importance of a professional pet-sitting service.

I should note that nothing was stolen, but this couple was living in an apartment and evidently just wanted more space to have friends over.

Roopie 1023 OP think I was just too shocked. We were 2500 miles away, and I felt oddly like it was my fault for not specifically saying "by the way, please don't have a party at my house while we're gone." Not that feeling that was right - at all - I just internalized it and didn't know how to react. I'm 15 years older now, and I've grown out of being mousy and meek LOL.

SherryGabs I can be somewhat okay with having some friends over. At least they cleaned up. But to give away your garage code to strangers is a huge No-No!

Roopie 1023 OP I just don't understand how ever having people over is OK. They weren't stayover petsitters, so I had zero thoughts that they would spend more than 15 minutes there on any given day.

violettea_slays Exactly, it's not just r ide, it's a huge boundary cross. You trusted them to feed your cats and watch the place, not to throw a party. The fact that nothing was stolen doesn't make it any less messed up.

areyoukind 1990 That was shady and rode. Wow. Idk that I could have been calm after that.

Useless890 How many of those surprise guests had to use the restroom during the evening? How many decided to snoop around while in that part of the house? Too many possibilities, all of them bad.

Rowan-The-Writer What the actual heck? I see why they were so eager to do it for free now... That is soo weird, imo not normal either. I would've been uncomfy as heck if I found out people did this in my home.
